The Chills

"Submarine Bells" is the second full-length album by New Zealand band The Chills, released in 1990. The album was critically acclaimed and is considered a milestone in the Dunedin Sound genre, a type of indie pop associated mainly with the city of Dunedin in New Zealand. The Dunedin Sound draws upon classic sixties pop, punk, and folk rock. The band was known for their melodic sound, characterized by Martin Phillipps' articulations. The album was ranked one of the best albums of 1990 by critics, and the single "Heavenly Pop Hit" received considerable attention and even charted in the United States. Early in their career, the lineup of The Chills changed frequently, with Phillipps being the only constant member. However, their line-up remained the same during the recording of "Submarine Bells".
