"The Silver Lining" is the ninth studio album by American alternative rock band Soul Asylum, released on July 11, 2006. It's the band's first album released on Sony BMG-owned Legacy Recordings. This was also their first studio album since the 1998 "Candy from a Stranger".
The album marks a comeback for the band, after a period of inactivity following declining popularity in the previous decade. It was the last studio album featuring the original bassist, Karl Mueller, who passed away from throat cancer in 2005. Before his death, he managed to contribute to most of the tracks on the album, and "The Silver Lining" is dedicated to his memory.
Some key tracks of the album include "Stand Up and Be Strong," "Success Is Not So Sweet," "Lately," and "Slowly Rising." Each song carries the signature soulful and gritty rock sound that Soul Asylum is known for. "Stand Up and Be Strong" opened to strong reviews and was subsequently used in the TV show Grey's Anatomy.
"The Silver Lining" was a brave return to recording for the band and was followed by a live tour. It had a generally positive reception from reviewers, while the fans welcomed the return of the band, lauding its resilience in the face of personal tragedy and the changing music landscape. The album reflects the band's perseverance and at its core, remains true to the storyteller style and rock energy that encapsulates Soul Asylum's unmistakable identity.
