"We're an American Band" is the seventh studio album by American hard rock band Grand Funk Railroad, released on July 15, 1973, by Capitol Records. This album marked a significant point in the band's career, as it was certified gold by the RIAA just over a month after its release. It was also notable for being the first album with Craig Frost, who played organ, clavinet, and Moog, adding new dimensions to the band's sound. Previously a power trio, Grand Funk Railroad now had a fourth member contributing to their music.
The album's title track, "We're an American Band," was released as the first single on July 2, 1973, and the second single, "Walk Like a Man," followed on October 29, 1973. Both singles were sung by drummer Don Brewer. The album cover initially featured gold-colored foil, and the first pressings were made on clear, dark yellow vinyl to mimic a "gold" record. The album has been reissued multiple times and is available in various formats, including Compact Disc and a Quadraphonic mix on 8-Track cartridge.
"We're an American Band" is listed as #200 in the National Association of Recording Merchandisers' (NARM) Definitive 200 albums of all time, reflecting its lasting impact and popularity.
