"Fairport Convention" is the debut studio album by the British folk rock band Fairport Convention, released in 1968. The album showcases the band's early style, which was heavily influenced by American folk rock and psychedelic music. It was recorded at Sound Techniques studio, Chelsea, London during the summer of 1968.
However, only three songs are original compositions, and one is traditional, the rest covers of contemporary American songs. The band's lineup consists of Richard Thompson, Simon Nicol, Ashley Hutchings, and Shaun Frater, with Judy Dyble as the lead female vocalist.
The album did not initially receive much attention and did not chart in the UK for another year. Despite this, it is regarded as one of the most important precursors to the British folk rock movement. The band went on to greater success with their next albums, but "Fairport Convention" remains a highly-regarded example of 1960s British folk rock.
