"Platinum Jazz" is a double album by War, released on Blue Note Records in July 1977. It marks a unique entry in War's discography for several reasons. The album's first half consists of new material, while the second half features a compilation of tracks from their previous albums. Notably, "Platinum Jazz" is their only record released under Blue Note, a jazz label, despite still being under contract with United Artists Records at the time.
This album diverges from War's typical style by emphasizing instrumental jazz-based music, although some tracks include vocals. It is noteworthy as Blue Note's first Platinum-selling album.
A single was released from the album on Blue Note, featuring edited versions of "L.A. Sunshine" and "Slowly We Walk Together." In the UK, the album was reissued by Island Records under the title "Platinum Funk," and also released as a single album with selected tracks: Side 1 featured "War is Coming War is Coming," "I Got You," and a shortened version of "L.A. Sunshine," while Side 2 included "River Niger," "Slowly We Walk Together," and "Platinum Jazz."
