Procol Harum

"Broken Barricades" is the fifth studio album by English rock band Procol Harum. It was released in 1971, achieving modest chart success in the UK and U.S following its release. The album was produced by Chris Thomas and was recorded at AIR studios in London. This album is significant as it was the final Procol Harum record to feature guitarist Robin Trower in full before his embarkation on a successful solo career. The title track 'Broken Barricades' was inspired by Trower, while 'Song for a Dreamer' was a tribute to late legendary musician Jimi Hendrix, who influenced Trower greatly. The album features elements of progressive rock, blues, and soul. One of the most popular tracks on the album, 'Simple Sister,' is known for its heavy guitar riffs and orchestral arrangements. 'Power Failure,' another significant track, has been a staple of their live performances for many years. Despite the difficulties within the band – especially with Trower's departure – "Broken Barricades" is a dynamic balance of hard rock and the lyrical style of classical-influenced prog rock, highlighting the broad range of Procol Harum's music.
