Procol Harum

"A Salty Dog" is the third studio album by English rock band Procol Harum. Released in June 1969 by Regal Zonophone, the album was the band's highest-charting release, reaching number 27 on the UK Albums Chart and number 32 on the Billboard 200. Creating a departure from their previous work, "A Salty Dog" pushed the boundaries of the genre by introducing more production techniques and incorporating various musical styles. The album shows an increased depth and complexity in Gary Brooker and Keith Reid's songwriting, and contributing significantly to setting the groundwork for what eventually became known as progressive rock. The title track, "A Salty Dog," became a classy orchestral piece that started with the sound of waves washing ashore and a ship's bell, creating an authentic maritime feel. This was one of the earliest examples of a rock band using an orchestra, which was fully orchestrated by the band's lead singer, Gary Brooker. The album was remastered and released in 2009, boasting better sound quality and extra tracks. The diverse range of songs covered several different genres with a mix of blues, classical, pop, and rock arrangements. Though not as commercially popular as some of their contemporaries, the album remains a fan favorite for its unique experimental sound and reflective, poetic songwriting.
