Nazz

"Nazz" is the debut album by the American rock group Nazz, released in 1968. It features two notable singles: "Open My Eyes" and "Hello It's Me." While "Hello It's Me" reached number 66 on the Billboard Pop Singles chart, "Open My Eyes" did not chart initially but has since been recognized as a psychedelic rock classic and included in various genre compilations. The song "Hello It's Me" later became a hit when re-recorded by guitarist Todd Rundgren for his solo album Something/Anything? in 1972. The album peaked at number 118 on the Billboard Pop Albums chart and was later remastered and reissued in 2006, featuring bonus tracks. After a successful showcase at the Boston Tea Party in January 1968, Nazz signed with Screen Gems-Columbia. The band entered I. D. Sound Studios in Hollywood in April 1968, fully prepared with their material. The songs were primarily guitar-oriented, reflecting lead vocalist and keyboardist Stewkey’s preference for performing as a frontman. One of the standout tracks, "If That's the Way You Feel," was heavily influenced by the songwriting of Jimmy Webb. Rundgren noted the writing process was challenging for him, requiring significant input from arranger Shorty Rogers. Initially considering Felix Pappalardi as the producer, the band ultimately chose Bill Traut. Rundgren was critical of Traut's contributions, stating he provided little in terms of musical direction. Discontent with Traut's final mix, the band sought to enhance two tracks, "Open My Eyes" and "Hello It's Me," in a New York studio. For "Open My Eyes," they desired a flanging effect, which they struggled to achieve until Rundgren accidentally discovered the technique while experimenting with a two-track tape machine. Overall, the album's recording process reflects the band's ambitious yet evolving sound during a pivotal moment in rock music.
