"78 in the Shade" is the fifth and final studio album by Small Faces, released on Atlantic Records in 1978 and re-issued in 2005 on Wounded Bird. This album was part of the band's brief reunion in the 1970s, following their earlier reunion album Playmates. Despite its release, 78 in the Shade, like its predecessor, did not achieve commercial success, leading to the band's breakup shortly after. The British music scene was shifting towards punk rock at the time, which contributed to the band's struggles.
Guitarist Jimmy McCulloch, who had recently left Wings, briefly joined Small Faces for this album. McCulloch informed Paul McCartney of his decision to join Marriott, to which McCartney reportedly responded, "I was a little put out at first, but, well, what can you say to that?" McCulloch's involvement with the band lasted only a few months in late 1977, making *78 in the Shade* his sole album with Small Faces.
