John Cale

"Artificial Intelligence" is the tenth solo studio album by Welsh rock musician John Cale, released on September 6, 1985, by Beggars Banquet Records. The album marks a continuation of Cale's exploration of experimental rock and electronic influences. Known for his avant-garde approach, Cale's work on this album incorporates a range of sounds and styles, reflecting his innovative spirit and musical versatility. Artificial Intelligence is recognized for its blend of rock, electronic, and experimental elements, showcasing Cale's distinct artistic vision. Artificial Intelligence was initially titled Black Rose, but changes to the title and tracks delayed its release by five weeks. John Cale recorded the album in three weeks at Strongroom Studios with Nico's backing band, the Faction, and a few additional musicians. Notably, backing vocals were provided by Gill O'Donovan and Susie O'List, who had previously toured with Eurythmics. The chaotic recording period coincided with significant personal changes for Cale. His daughter Eden was born during this time, prompting him to address his addictions to alcohol and cocaine. Following this, Cale temporarily shifted focus away from recording and performing live, directing his energies toward other projects until the release of *Words for the Dying* in 1989.
