De La Soul

"The Grind Date" is the seventh studio album by the American hip hop group De La Soul, released on October 5, 2004. Initially intended to conclude the Art Official Intelligence trilogy, the album evolved into a standalone project, leading the group to pause work on AOI III. Musically, The Grind Date is brisker and leaner than the group's earlier albums. It features contributions from notable producers such as the late J Dilla, Madlib, and 9th Wonder, with Supa Dave West producing several tracks. One standout track, "Rock Co.Kane Flow," features MF DOOM and was produced by Jake One, showcasing Posdnuos's commentary on current hip hop trends. The album is light on guest appearances, featuring only four guest MCs, including Common. Unlike previous De La Soul albums, The Grind Date does not include skits, although a short musical prelude introduces the first track, "The Future." The album's cover and sleeve, designed by Morning Breath Inc., are inspired by a 2005 calendar. In November 2014, The Grind Date was reissued by BMG Rights Management to mark its tenth anniversary.
