"Avalanche" is the fourth studio album by the American rock band Mountain, released in 1974. Following the success of their previous albums, especially the hit "Mississippi Queen" from "Climbing!", "Avalanche" continued the band's tradition of heavy, blues-influenced rock music.
The album features a blend of hard-hitting rockers and more melodic, introspective tracks. Highlights include the opening track "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On," a raucous cover of the classic Jerry Lee Lewis song, and "Sister Justice," a hard-driving anthem with a catchy riff and powerful vocals from lead singer Leslie West.
Other notable tracks on "Avalanche" include the bluesy "Sittin' on a Rainbow" and the epic "Nantucket Sleighride (To Owen Coffin)," which showcases the band's instrumental prowess with its intricate guitar work and dynamic shifts in tempo.
Despite receiving positive reviews from critics, "Avalanche" did not achieve the same level of commercial success as Mountain's previous albums. However, it remains a favorite among fans of 1970s hard rock and is considered a solid entry in the band's discography.
