Renaissance

"Illusion" is the second studio album by the English progressive rock band Renaissance, released in 1971. The line-up of the band had changed drastically following their debut album in 1969, sporting nearly entirely new members, including Annie Haslam who would become synonymous with the band's identity. While retaining the band's distinct fusion of rock, folk, and classical music elements, "Illusion" also delves deeper into mystical and romantic lyrical themes. The album is noted for its vibrant and imaginative compositions and was produced by former Yardbirds guitarist, Paul Samwell-Smith. The album was initially released only in Germany, due to the change in lineup and logistical issues. It was later officially released worldwide in 1977, after the band's fourth album "Scheherazade And Other Stories" achieved commercial success. Though not as commercially successful as follow-up Renaissance records, "Illusion" is recognized for its musical sophistication, with standout tracks like "Love Goes On" and "Golden Thread." It set the stylistic groundwork that the band would continue to develop throughout their career. Despite its initially limited release, "Illusion" constitutes an important chapter in Renaissance’s discography.
