Miles Davis

"Miles Ahead," released in October 1957, is a seminal album by Miles Davis, marking his first collaboration with arranger Gil Evans since the "Birth of the Cool" sessions. This album is a key example of Third Stream music, blending jazz with elements of European classical and world music. Evans arranged the ten pieces into a continuous suite, with the exception of the title track, which concludes side A. Throughout the album, Davis exclusively plays the flugelhorn, backed by a large ensemble of sixteen woodwind and brass musicians, alongside drummer Art Taylor and bassist Paul Chambers. Notably, a fifth recording session involved Davis overdubbing to correct earlier mistakes, which becomes apparent in the stereo versions due to the album's original mono production. "Miles Ahead" is recognized not only for its innovative sound but also for its significant impact on the evolution of jazz music.
