"Milestones" is a studio album by Miles Davis, recorded with his "first great quintet," which was augmented to a sextet with the addition of alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley. It was released in September 1958 by Columbia Records.
Tenor saxophonist John Coltrane's return to Davis' group in 1958 marked the beginning of the "modal phase" in jazz, with Milestones and Kind of Blue (1959) being pivotal examples of 1950s modern jazz. During this period, Davis was exploring modal jazz, which involves using scale patterns other than the traditional major and minor scales.
On the track "Sid's Ahead," Davis showcases his versatility by playing both trumpet and piano. The piece features Davis on trumpet during the ensemble passages and solos, while he switches to piano to accompany the saxophonists and Paul Chambers's bass solo, filling in for the absent pianist Red Garland. "Billy Boy" serves as a solo feature for Garland and highlights the rhythm section's contribution.
