Vieux Farka Touré and Khruangbin

"Ali" is a collaborative studio album by Malian singer and guitarist Vieux Farka Touré and the Texan trio Khruangbin. Released on September 23, 2022, through Dead Oceans, the album features reinterpretations of songs originally by Vieux's legendary father, Ali Farka Touré, a pivotal figure in African music. The project blends Vieux's mastery of traditional Malian music with Khruangbin's unique sound, characterized by their fusion of global influences, funk, and psychedelic rock. This collaboration pays homage to Ali Farka Touré’s legacy while showcasing the artists' diverse musical backgrounds. The result is a rich tapestry of rhythm, melody, and cultural exchange, reflecting both the roots of West African music and contemporary musical exploration. Critically acclaimed for its heartfelt performances and innovative arrangements, Ali invites listeners to experience the timeless beauty of the original compositions through a fresh lens. Vieux Farka Touré sought musicians to create an album honoring his father, the renowned Malian guitarist Ali Farka Touré, who passed away in 2006. His manager recommended collaborating with the Houston-based trio Khruangbin. Vieux met the band at a pub in London and was impressed by their performance at the Roundhouse in 2018, which solidified his decision to work with them. The album was recorded over a week in June 2019 at Khruangbin's barn in Burton, Texas. The selection of songs for the album was made by Ali Farka Touré's 11 children, ensuring a personal touch to the tribute. Although the project faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was finalized in 2021, resulting in a heartfelt homage to Ali’s legacy through a fusion of traditional Malian music and contemporary styles.
