"Play" is the ninth studio album by the British new wave band Squeeze, released in 1991. This album, which is their only release with Reprise Records, marks a notable change in the band's lineup, as it features only four official members instead of the previous five. With Jools Holland's departure, Steve Nieve assumed many of the keyboard responsibilities previously handled by Holland.
Produced by Tony Berg, Play is viewed by Glenn Tilbrook, one of the band's key members, as the start of Squeeze's "renaissance period." Despite this, the album had limited commercial impact, spending just one week at number 41 on the UK Albums Chart in September 1991.
The album's liner notes are presented in the form of a play, creatively incorporating the lyrics into a script that references classic works such as Thornton Wilder's Our Town and Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot. This innovative presentation underscores the album's thematic and artistic approach.
