Split Enz

"Dizrythmia," released in 1977, is the third studio album by New Zealand new wave band Split Enz. This album marked a significant change for the band as it was the first to be released without co-founding members Phil Judd and Mike Chunn. Neil Finn, younger brother of band leader Tim Finn, replaced Judd, while Nigel Griggs took Chunn’s place. Additionally, Malcolm Green, an old friend of Griggs, replaced Emlyn Crowther, who also departed around this time. The album was released domestically by Mushroom Records and internationally by Chrysalis Records. The single "My Mistake" achieved success in New Zealand and Australia but did not make a significant impact overseas. The second single, "Bold as Brass," was also released from the album. "Dizrythmia" is considered the beginning of the band’s breakthrough and signaled a shift from their earlier art rock style to a more pop-oriented sound. The album's title refers to circadian dysrhythmia, commonly known as jet lag. The back cover of the album was originally intended to be the front cover, and both were designed by Noel Crombie, who also created the band's costumes. An interesting detail about the album is that Tim Finn coughs forty-four seconds into the track "Nice to Know," a feature that was inadvertently left in the final mix. Additionally, both Tim Finn and Eddie Rayner were disappointed with the final mix of "Charlie," feeling that the vocals sounded flat. Despite their concerns, the vocal was retained because engineer Geoff Emerick thought it was beautiful.
