Red House Painters

"Ocean Beach" is the fourth studio album by the American alternative rock band, Red House Painters. Released in 1995, the album marks a departure from the band's previous work, showcasing a more streamlined, traditional pop-rock sound paired with stripped-down acoustic motifs. The album includes standout tracks such as "Summer Dress," "San Geronimo," and "Over My Head." However, unlike their previous releases, the songs on "Ocean Beach" are significantly shorter and less sprawling, many being under four minutes. The band's lineup during this period featured Mark Kozelek on vocals and guitar, Gorden Mack on guitar, Jerry Vessel on bass, and Anthony Koutsos on drums. The album was both a critical and commercial success, further establishing Red House Painters as significant figures in the 1990s alternative rock scene. Interestingly, "Ocean Beach" was originally intended to be a Mark Kozelek solo album. The title of the album refers to the Ocean Beach neighborhood in San Francisco, where the band was based. Its cover art features a curious squirrel, which has become one of the more distinct and recognized pieces of artwork in the band’s discography. Overall, "Ocean Beach" is considered an essential release in the Red House Painters' catalog, showcasing their skill for dramatic emotion and atmospheric, melodic music.
