Red House Painters

Retrospective is a double-disc compilation album by the American alternative rock band Red House Painters, released in July 1999. The compilation covers the band's period with the 4AD label and is divided into two distinct parts: - Disc One features a curated selection of key tracks from the band's earlier albums, including their debut, Down Colorful Hill, and Ocean Beach. The tracks were chosen by 4AD's label owner, Ivo Watts-Russell, to highlight the definitive songs of Red House Painters' career up to that point. - Disc Two, subtitled Demos, Outtakes, Live 1989-1995, contains previously unreleased material such as demo versions and live recordings from the band's years with 4AD. The compilation was assembled to provide both a comprehensive overview of the band's work during their tenure with the label and a collection of rarities for dedicated fans. The accompanying booklet includes an essay by Rob O'Connor, written in April 1999. The compilation was originally considered under the working title Red Perspective.
