The KLF

"The White Room" is an album by British electronic music duo The KLF, released internationally in March 1991. It is the duo's most commercially successful output and is noted for its fusion of pop and house music elements. James Cauty and Bill Drummond, members of The KLF, started working on the album in 1989 on the back of their hit singles "What Time Is Love?" and "3 a.m. Eternal". The album takes its name from a set of ambient, minimalist pieces conceptualized by the duo earlier in their artistic career. Intended initially as the soundtrack to an eponymous, uncompleted movie, the album was initially shelved when these movie projects were abandoned. However, Drummond and Cauty challenged themselves to re-conceptualize the work, giving it a more commercial, pop-oriented makeover, resulting in the version of "The White Room" that was released globally. The album gave rise to several hit singles, including "3 a.m Eternal", "Last Train to Trancentral", and "Justified and Ancient", further cementing The KLF's status as pioneers of the UK's rave and electronic music scene. Its eclectic blend of styles and embrace of popular music genres led to substantial chart success, and it went on to become one of the fastest-selling albums in UK chart history. Critics positively received the album, with reviews praising its innovative combination of house music and pop. Notwithstanding their commercial success, The KLF announced a departure from the music business in 1992, cementing "The White Room's" place as their seminal work.
