The Pastels

"The Last Great Wilderness" is a music album by the Scottish indie rock band The Pastels. Released in 2003, the album serves as the soundtrack to David Mackenzie's film of the same name. Although traditionally known for their ramshackle and primitive pop, The Pastels showcased a different style in this album, with dreamier, moodier, cinematic elements. This was mainly due to the album's nature as a film soundtrack. The album was also a collaborative effort, featuring contributions from various artists such as Bill Wells, International Airport's Tom Crossley, and Gerard Love from Teenage Fanclub. Stephen McRobbie, Katrina Mitchell, and Annabel Wright, who are the primary voices behind the band, set a tranquil and harmonious tone with their music, transcending the usual conventions from their other albums by creating a unique soundscape suitable for the big screen. The songs range from beautiful instrumental sketches to full-formed pop songs like "I Picked A Flower" and "Voyage to the Sun." The album was well-received critically, praising the band for their musical departure and successful venture into the realm of soundtracks. It manages to stand alone as an exceptional piece of work while complementing the movie it was designed for perfectly.
