"Unsound Methods" is the fourth studio album by Recoil, released in 1997. It was recorded at Alan Wilder's home studio, The Thin Line, in Sussex, with sessions spanning from September 1996 to March 1997. Alan Wilder produced the album, with assistance from Hepzibah Sessa and additional production by Steve Lyon. Mixing was handled by Wilder, with help from Paul Stevens and Simon Shazell.
This album marked Wilder's fourth Recoil release and his first after leaving Depeche Mode in June 1995. The music diverged significantly from previous Recoil works. Wilder noted that the sound aligned more with the approach of Depeche Mode's Songs of Faith and Devotion, incorporating snippets of performance that were sampled and sequenced to create a more layered listening experience.
The album features contributions from several vocalists, including spoken word artist Maggie Estep, Nitzer Ebb vocalist Douglas McCarthy, backup singer Hildia Campbell, and Siobhan Lynch. Additionally, the avant-garde electronic duo Pan Sonic from Turku, Finland, remixed the track "Shunt."
