Recoil

"1 + 2" is the debut album by Recoil, released in August 1986. The album was initially available on vinyl, with CD and cassette versions coming out two years later alongside Recoil's second release, Hydrology. Alan Wilder, known for his work with Depeche Mode, recorded some demos using a Portastudio, a 4-track cassette machine. Daniel Miller of Mute Records was impressed by these demos and decided to help produce them, leading to the formation of Recoil. The early recordings showcased Wilder's innovative approach to sampling technology, highlighting his ability to transform the sound associated with Depeche Mode into something distinct. Although 1 + 2 was completed in the early 1980s, it was released as a twelve-inch EP in the same year as Depeche Mode's fifth studio album, Black Celebration. The album marked Wilder's initial foray into his solo work, revealing his unique musical vision and experimental style.
