"Rooster Rag" is the 16th and final studio album by the American rock band Little Feat. Released in June 2012, this album marks a creative comeback for the legendary band. It is their first album of new material since 2003’s "Kickin’ It at the Barn".
The album exemplifies Little Feat's musical diversity, with a mix of rock, blues, country, and zydeco influences. "Rooster Rag" includes four songs co-written by former Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter, along with original band songs to flavor the compilation. The lead-off track, "Candy Man Blues" is a Mississippi John Hurt song.
The band that delivered "Rooster Rag" comprised original members like Bill Payne and Paul Barrere, alongside other longtime features such as Fred Tackett, Kenny Gradney, Sam Clayton, and Gabe Ford, who replaced Richie Hayward on drums following his death in 2010.
"Rooster Rag" garnered favorable reviews and was largely seen as a strong and welcomed return to form for the band. The album demonstrates the group’s compelling synthesis of rock, blues, country, gospel and folk music, showcasing the unique sound that has kept Little Feat vital and relevant for over four decades.
