"Before the Frost...Until the Freeze" is the eighth studio album by the American rock band The Black Crowes. Released on September 15, 2009, by Silver Arrow Records, the album was recorded before a live audience at Levon Helm's studio, The Barn, in Woodstock, New York. The recording sessions took place in late February and early March 2009.
Produced by Paul Stacey, who has been a longtime collaborator with the band, Before the Frost...Until the Freeze features a unique release strategy. The album was initially available as two separate components: Before the Frost was released on CD, while Until the Freeze was made available as a digital download through a code included with the CD purchase. A vinyl version was also issued, presenting the songs in a different running order.
The album stands out for its design, as the CD was styled to resemble a vinyl record, reflecting the band's appreciation for classic formats. It also marks the last album of original material to feature longtime members Steve Gorman (drums), Luther Dickinson (guitar), and Adam MacDougall (keyboard). The double album showcases the band's signature blend of rock, blues, and Americana, capturing the essence of their live performance energy in a studio setting.
