Taylor Swift

"Speak Now" is the third studio album by American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift, released on October 25, 2010, by Big Machine Records. Swift wrote the album entirely herself while touring in 2009–2010 to reflect on her transition from adolescence to adulthood. She framed Speak Now as a loose concept album about the unsaid things she wanted to deliver to the subjects of her songs. The album focuses on heartbreak and reflections on broken relationships, with some tracks inspired by Swift's rising stardom and her experiences with critics. Swift and Nathan Chapman produced Speak Now, which combines country pop, pop rock, and power pop, featuring acoustic instruments alongside electric guitars, dynamic drums, and orchestral strings. After the album's release, Swift embarked on the Speak Now World Tour from February 2011 to March 2012. The album was supported by six singles, including the US Billboard Hot 100 top-ten singles "Mine" and "Back to December," as well as the US Hot Country Songs number ones "Sparks Fly" and "Ours." Speak Now peaked atop the charts and received multi-platinum certifications in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. In the US, it sold one million copies within its first week, spent six weeks at number one on the Billboard 200, and was certified six-times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. Music critics generally praised Speak Now for its radio-friendly melodies and emotional engagement. Some viewed the lyrics as a sign of Swift's maturity in early adulthood, while others criticized the confrontational tracks as shallow. At the 54th Annual Grammy Awards in 2012, Speak Now was nominated for Best Country Album, and its third single "Mean" won Best Country Song and Best Country Solo Performance. The album appeared in decade-end lists by Billboard and Spin, and Rolling Stone ranked it among the "50 Best Female Albums of All Time." After a dispute regarding the ownership of her back catalog, Swift re-recorded Speak Now, releasing it as Speak Now (Taylor's Version) on July 7, 2023. Taylor Swift released her second studio album Fearless in November 2008 through Big Machine Records. The album spent 11 weeks at number one on the US Billboard 200 and was the best-selling album of 2009 in the US. Swift became the youngest artist to have an annual best-seller since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking album sales. Two singles, "Love Story" and "You Belong with Me," performed well on both country and pop radio, bringing Swift to mainstream prominence. Fearless won Album of the Year and Best Country Album at the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards. The success of Fearless established Swift as a major country artist crossing into the mainstream. At the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, Kanye West interrupted her acceptance speech, an incident that received widespread media coverage. Swift began writing for her third album immediately after releasing Fearless and continued during her Fearless Tour in 2009 and 2010. Due to her extensive touring schedule, Swift wrote Speak Now alone, capturing her best ideas in various locations. Inspired by her growth into adulthood, she conceived Speak Now as a loose concept album about the things she wanted to tell certain people. Swift's songwriting aimed for emotional honesty, using specific details to convey her feelings. Departing from the fairy-tale themes of Fearless, Speak Now explores introspection and broken relationships while maintaining her "good-girl" image. Some tracks were inspired by her public experiences, including past relationships that garnered media attention. The lyrics are more direct and confrontational than on her previous albums. "Back to December" is a confession seeking forgiveness from an ex-lover, while the title track involves crashing an ex-boyfriend's wedding. "Dear John" narrates a devastating relationship, and "Better than Revenge" asserts vengeance against a romantic rival. Romantic optimism is also a theme, with "Mine" expressing hope for happiness despite a tendency to run from love. Swift had written "Sparks Fly" before her debut album and re-recorded it for Speak Now after fan requests. "Enchanted" captures the aftermath of a special encounter, while "Haunted" deals with romantic obsession. "Long Live" expresses gratitude to her fans and bandmates. Besides romance, Swift also contemplates self-perception in tracks like "Never Grow Up" and "Mean," which addresses her detractors. Swift wrote as many as 25 songs and began selecting tracks for the album by early 2010, ensuring coherence by sharing her choices with family, friends, and producer Nathan Chapman. Swift initially considered Enchanted as a working title, but the founder of Big Machine Records recommended a different title. She settled on Speak Now, believing it best captured the album's essence as a metaphor for expressing feelings before it's too late. Swift finalized the track list by June 2010.
