"Not Available" is the fourth studio album by the American avant-garde band The Residents, released in 1978. The album's concept was based on their "Theory of Obscurity," which posits that an artist's purest work is created without consideration of an audience. As per this theory, "Not Available" was intended to remain unreleased until the band completely forgot about its existence.
However, due to delays in the release of their next project, "Eskimo," and the unexpected success of their previous work, especially the "Duck Stab" EP, "Not Available" was eventually released to satisfy the demand for new material from The Residents. The album continued the band's tradition of experimental and unconventional music, featuring their signature blend of electronic sounds, unconventional song structures, and cryptic lyrics.
"Not Available" remains a significant part of The Residents' discography, reflecting their commitment to pushing artistic boundaries and exploring concepts of anonymity and creative purity in the realm of avant-garde music.
