The Jesus And Mary Chain

"Glasgow Eyes" is the eighth studio album by Scottish alternative rock band The Jesus and Mary Chain, released on 22 March 2024 via Fuzz Club. It is their first studio album in seven years, following Damage and Joy (2017). The album debuted at number 7 on the UK Albums Chart, marking their first top 10 entry since Barbed Wire Kisses (1988). The album was recorded mostly at Castle of Doom Studios in Glasgow. Jim Reid stated that the band's creative approach remains the same as it was in 1984, relying on instinct and experimentation. They incorporated synth elements to tweak their sound, though staying true to their signature style. However, the album's recording process faced a setback when their original recordings were lost, forcing them to re-record the entire album from scratch. The lead single "Jamcod" was released on 29 November 2023, featuring a blend of dark electronica and crunching guitars. The band is set to embark on a European tour in March and April 2024. The album received generally favorable reviews, scoring 77/100 on Metacritic. Critics praised its mix of electronics and classic fuzz-rock elements. Mojo described the album as a "renewing force," while Uncut noted that the Reid brothers remain "defiantly out of time." Record Collector hailed it as "more vital than anything they've done in the last 35 years." However, Pitchfork gave a slightly lower score of 6.5/10.
