The Jesus And Mary Chain

"Munki" is the sixth studio album by Scottish rock band The Jesus and Mary Chain, released after they signed with Sub Pop in the U.S. and Creation in the UK. The album title was intentionally misspelled and chosen for its lack of direct meaning, suggested by the band's sister Linda. Released in 1998, "Munki" was the band's final album before an eight-year hiatus starting in October 1999. The album includes contributions from Hope Sandoval of Mazzy Star and features singles like "I Hate Rock 'n' Roll" (released in 1995), "Cracking Up," and "I Love Rock 'n' Roll." The creation of "Munki" reflected the deteriorating relationship between brothers Jim and William Reid, who often recorded separately. Jim noted that the divided recording process led to a fragmented feel in the album. "I Hate Rock 'n' Roll" was written by William Reid out of frustration with the music industry, while Jim Reid wrote "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" to provide a more balanced perspective. Despite mixed reviews from critics, with Alternative Press rating it a perfect 5 out of 5, the album received less favorable feedback from AllMusic and Rolling Stone. "Munki" peaked at No. 47 on the UK album charts, marking the band's first studio album not to reach the Top 40.
