Traffic

"Last Exit" is an album by the English rock band Traffic. Released in May 1969, it is the third album from the rock group. Composed of studio and live recordings, the usage of both formats makes this album unique and a creative way of giving the listener a taste of the band's versatile musical abilities. The background of the album is quite interesting. After the departure of Dave Mason, the band was left as a trio featuring Steve Winwood, Chris Wood, and Jim Capaldi. The group was beginning to unravel, with Winwood leaving to join Blind Faith before the album's completion. To fulfill contractual commitments, the remaining live and studio recordings were combined to create "Last Exit." One side of the LP version of the album features the songs, "Just for You" and "Shanghai Noodle Factory" that are leftover studio recordings. The rest of the LP features live recordings from a concert at the Fillmore Auditorium, particularly notable for versions of "Dear Mr. Fantasy" and "Who Knows What Tomorrow May Bring." Despite the circumstances under which it was made, "Last Exit" showcased the unique blend of rock, blues, and jazz that Traffic creatively fused together. It earned a spot on the UK albums chart, peaking at number 19, and it also charted in the US, although not as successfully. Overall, it stands as a testament to Traffic's musical prowess and creativity, even amidst adversity.
