"Things We Lost in the Fire" is the fifth full-length studio album by Low, an American indie rock band formed in 1993. This album was released in January 2001 under the label Kranky. It represents a departure from the minimal, slowcore sound the band was known for and features more harmonic diversity and a richer production quality.
The album was well received by critics and is often considered one of the band's best works. It displays a tremendous restraint and sense of space, combining gentle melodies and harmonies with occasional slow buildups to add depth. It features songs like "Sunflower," "Dinosaur Act," and "Whitetail" which have remained in the band's regular live rotation.
The band members during the making of this album were Alan Sparhawk, Mimi Parker, and Zak Sally. The album was produced by Steve Albini, an American musician and recording engineer whose production style provides a more polished and expansive sound compared to the band's previous works. This combination of Albini's audio engineering and the band's artistic vision has led to a genuinely emotional and melancholic album.
