"Tension" is the sixteenth studio album by Australian singer Kylie Minogue, released on September 22, 2023, through BMG and Darenote. This album marks her first release since Disco in 2020, with production beginning in May 2022 and concluding the following year. Minogue collaborated with a range of artists, including Richard "Biff" Stannard, Duck Blackwell, Jackson Foote, PhD, and Cutfather.
Initially inspired by 1980s music, the creative direction shifted to focus on the individuality of each track rather than a central theme. Minogue described the album's sound as reminiscent of her 2003 single "Slow," evolving into various electronic dance genres such as synth-pop, disco, funk, R&B, contemporary dance-pop, and EDM. The lyrics explore themes of love, lust, fun, and empowerment, consistent with her previous work.
Critically acclaimed for its sound and production, Tension is often regarded as one of Minogue's best albums, making it onto numerous year-end lists. It achieved commercial success, reaching number one in Australia, Belgium, Scotland, and the UK, and earned a silver certification from the BPI in the UK.
The album features four singles: "Padam Padam," "Tension," and "Hold On to Now" as lead singles, with "10 Out of 10" released as a promotional track featuring Dutch DJ Oliver Heldens. "Padam Padam" became a sleeper hit, winning Minogue an ARIA Award for Best Pop Release and her first Grammy for Best Pop Dance Recording.
To promote Tension, Minogue released a remix album titled Extension: The Extended Mixes, and she performed live during her More Than Just a Residency at the Voltaire club in The Venetian, Las Vegas. A sequel album, Tension II, is set for release on October 18, 2024, accompanied by a supporting tour launching in February 2025.
