Syd Barrett

"The Peel Session" is an album by British musician Syd Barrett, who was best known as the co-founder and original frontman for the iconic rock band Pink Floyd. This album was released posthumously in 1988 and it contains songs recorded in 1970 on the "John Peel's Top Gear" radio show. As such, these sessions are among the last recordings Barrett made as a solo artist. The album is significant as it offers a glimpse into Barrett's capabilities as an artist during a period when his mental health was in decline. It includes songs that highlight his distinctive and innovative approach to songwriting, featuring his signature blend of psychedelic rock and English folk music. The album features four tracks in total: "Terrapin", "Gigolo Aunt", "Baby Lemonade", and "Effervescing Elephant". These songs all comprise Barrett's playful lyricism, unconventional song structures, and idiosyncratic guitar playing. Interestingly, despite Syd Barrett's declining mental health around this period, critics and fans alike have noted that the performances on "The Peel Session" seem full of life and energy, indicating that music continued to be a source of joie de vivre for Barrett.
