Paul McCartney

"Give My Regards to Broad Street" is the fifth solo studio album by Paul McCartney, serving as the soundtrack to the film of the same name. The album includes covers of Beatles songs, Wings tracks, and solo material by McCartney, along with a few new songs. It reached number one on the UK chart, and the lead single, "No More Lonely Nights," received BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations. This album marked McCartney's final release under Columbia Records, his US label for over five years. The album is largely a retrospective, sequenced to reflect the order of songs in the film. It features re-interpretations of McCartney's classics, including "Good Day Sunshine," "Yesterday," "Here, There and Everywhere," "Silly Love Songs," "For No One," "Eleanor Rigby," and "The Long and Winding Road." It also includes songs from his more recent albums, such as "Ballroom Dancing" and "Wanderlust" from Tug of War, and "So Bad" from Pipes of Peace. Besides "No More Lonely Nights," the only previously unheard tracks were "Not Such a Bad Boy," "No Values," and a symphonic extension of "Eleanor Rigby" titled "Eleanor's Dream." Due to the album's long running time, the vinyl release featured edited versions of the songs, while the cassette and later CD editions included the full lengths, with the CD also offering a bonus track called "Goodnight Princess." The Beatles cover versions are dedicated to John Lennon, who had been killed four years prior. Preceded by the hit "No More Lonely Nights (Ballad)," which included guitar work by David Gilmour, the album entered the UK charts at number one and was certified platinum. It peaked at number 21 in the United States, where it performed below expectations. This release signaled the end of McCartney's association with Columbia Records in the US, which began in 1979 with the final Wings album, Back to the Egg. He subsequently re-signed with EMI Records worldwide, with his Columbia output reverting to Capitol Records in the US. Alongside the film's premiere in November, McCartney's recording "We All Stand Together," credited to "Paul McCartney and the Frog Chorus," was released and became a UK hit, reaching number three. The animated film accompanying the song was shown before the main feature of Give My Regards to Broad Street. The original soundtrack was released on Columbia Records in 1984 in North America and was remastered in 1993, reissued on CD as part of The Paul McCartney Collection series, including two extended dance mixes of "No More Lonely Nights" as bonus tracks.
