The Damned

"Phantasmagoria" is the sixth studio album by the British punk rock band, The Damned. Released in July 1985, it marked a shift in the band's musical style, incorporating elements of gothic rock and psychedelic pop. The album was the group's first release on the MCA label. Hell-bent on ensuring a commercial success, the company hired Jon Kelly, notable for his work with artists like Kate Bush and Deacon Blue. "Phantasmagoria" was recorded at Eel Pie Studios, previously owned by Pete Townshend of The Who. The album's standout hit was its lead single "The Shadow of Love," which reached number 11 in the UK charts. Other singles from the album included "Is It a Dream" and "Grimly Fiendish," both making it to the UK Top 40. "Phantasmagoria" itself made it to UK number 11, becoming The Damned's highest-charting album to date. Reception for the album was mixed, as some listeners appreciated the change in style while others pined for the band's punk roots. The powerful imagery and tone of the album ended up influencing the band’s aesthetic and even impacted their live shows. Consequently, "Phantasmagoria" over time has proved significant within The Damned’s discography, not just for its commercial success but for marking an important transition in their musical journey.
