The Creatures

"Boomerang" is the second studio album by British duo The Creatures, consisting of singer Siouxsie Sioux and musician Budgie. Recorded in Spain with producer Mike Hedges, the album was created in Jerez de la Frontera, in the Andalusian region. Featuring a range of brass arrangements, including trumpet, trombone, and saxophone, Boomerang was praised for its blend of diverse musical styles, incorporating blues, jazz, flamenco, and other Spanish influences. Critics widely acclaimed the album for Siouxsie's vocal performance and the eclectic mix of genres. The duo's combination of musical styles resulted in a varied collection of tracks, each offering something unique. The album includes songs like "Manchild," which mixes flamenco rhythms with trumpet, and "Strolling Wolf," an Iberian-inspired piece. Boomerang also features blues and jazz elements, such as on the tracks "Killing Time" and "Willow." "Pluto Drive," one of the album's more experimental pieces, blends low R&B with ambient electronic loops, while "Pity" stands out as a lullaby with Jamaican steel drums played by Budgie. The album was recorded in Spain, with all the instruments and vocals laid down there, except for the brass arrangements, which were recorded in London. Budgie, along with trombonist Peter Thoms and saxophonist Gary Barnacle, conceived the brass sections, having previously collaborated on the horns for the "Right Now" single. "Pluto Drive" was the only track entirely recorded after their return to England. Photographer Anton Corbijn joined the band in Spain to capture images for the album’s artwork. It was the first time he used color photography with filters, and he also designed the album's artwork for Boomerang, working alongside the design group Area. The lyrics on Boomerang explore diverse themes. For instance, "Manchild" tells the story of a child caught in a vendetta between two Colombian villages, a narrative loosely tied to drug trafficking. "Willow" was inspired by Budgie's personal experience with the death of his mother, reflecting his grief and the impact it had on his family. Boomerang was released in various formats, including CD, vinyl, and cassette, by Polydor Records and Geffen Records. It was later made available on streaming platforms such as Spotify.
