Grace Jones

"Hurricane" is the tenth studio album by singer Grace Jones, released in 2008, marking her first album of new material in 19 years. The album features autobiographical songs and includes the title track, which was originally recorded in 1997 as a collaboration with Tricky under the name "Cradle to the Grave." It achieved sales of over 100,000 copies in Europe, and a dub version titled Hurricane – Dub was released on September 5, 2011. Grace Jones' previous album, Bulletproof Heart, came out in 1989, and despite attempts to return to music throughout the 1990s, it would take nearly two decades for her next full-length release. She had initially vowed not to make another album but changed her mind after meeting music producer Ivor Guest. After they began collaborating, Guest announced in 2007 that they had completed the album, which was initially rumored to be titled Corporate Cannibal. The album contains several autobiographical tracks, including "This Is," "Williams' Blood," and "I'm Crying (Mother's Tears)," as well as "Love You to Life," which is based on real events. The title track and "Well Well Well" pay tribute to the subject of corporate capitalism and the memory of Alex Sadkin, who co-produced three of Jones' albums in the 1980s. Other songs like "Sunset Sunrise" reflect on humanity's relationship with nature, while "Devil in My Life" was inspired by a party in Venice. The album features a blend of genres, with critics noting its mix of dub, rock, reggae, industrial electro, and trip-hop. The cover art features chocolate sculptures of Jones, created by lifecasting expert John Schoonraad and his team. The first single, "Corporate Cannibal," was released in August 2008 but did not chart, while the second single, "Williams' Blood," released in December, found success in Belgium. A promotional single, "Well Well Well," followed in 2009, and "Love You to Life" was selected as a third single, though its release was delayed. To promote the album, Jones performed at the Meltdown festival in London in June 2008 and appeared on various television shows. Hurricane was released on Wall of Sound on November 3, 2008, in the UK, and was dedicated to the memory of her father, Bishop Robert W. Jones.
