The Stranglers

"Coup de Grace", the thirteenth studio album by The Stranglers, was released in 1998. This British rock band crafted an eclectic mix of rock, punk, and New Wave styles across the album. Despite the difficult period the band was going through, having experienced internal struggles and changes in its lineup, notably the departure of Hugh Cornwell, they managed to mark this era with a distinctive sound. This album was the second one to feature Paul Roberts as the lead singer, who added a new vocal style to the band's legacy. Moreover, it was also an era of trial and experimentation for the band, with their use of synthesisers and mix of genres. Although "Coup de Grace" was not a chart-topping breakthrough, it witnessed the band trying to expand and redefine their sound, reflecting their resilience and adaptability in the challenging journey of the music industry. Songs like "In Heaven She Walks", "Valley of the Birds" and "Fools Rush Out" capture the essence of The Stranglers new sound and energy during this time. The album didn't have quite the commercial success as some of their earlier efforts, however, it did receive positive notice for its tight songwriting and performance. To date, fans and critics alike acknowledge the album as a testament to the band's creative persistence and integrity.
