"Kilimanjaro" is the debut album by the neo-psychedelic Liverpool band The Teardrop Explodes, released on 10 October 1980. The album features versions of the band's early singles such as "Sleeping Gas," "Bouncing Babies," "Treason," and "When I Dream." Reissues also include their biggest hit, "Reward." Additionally, it contains the song "Books," originally from Julian Cope's previous band, The Crucial Three, which was also recorded by Echo & the Bunnymen.
The original working title for the album was Everyone Wants to Shag the Teardrop Explodes, which was later used for a CD release of demos for the band's unfinished third album. The initial release featured a shadowy photograph of the band on the cover, while the 1981 reissue changed the artwork to a photo of zebras in front of Mount Kilimanjaro, after which the album is named. Subsequent CD reissues have used either cover.
In 2000, Cope approved a re-release of Kilimanjaro with bonus tracks, original artwork, remastered sound, and full lyrics and essays. A deluxe 3-disc edition was released in 2010, including original singles, B-sides, and radio session recordings.
