"Icehouse" is the debut album by Australian rock band Icehouse, initially released in 1980 by independent label Regular Records. The band, originally called Flowers, had formed in Sydney in 1977. The album was co-produced by Keith Forsey, who contributed significantly to its synth-heavy sound.
The album is immensely popular and delivered mainstream success for Icehouse, both at home in Australia and internationally. Many of the album's hit songs have since become classics, including 'We Can Get Together' which cracked the top 20 of the Australian Singles Chart, and 'Can't Help Myself', which topped the charts.
Due to some conflicts with a Scottish group also called 'The Flowers', the band decided to change their name to Icehouse, the title track of this debut album. Eventually, 'Icehouse' was re-released and re-titled under the new band name.
The album's style can be characterized as new wave and rock with heavy synth elements, showcasing Iva Davies' vocals amidst cryptic & captivating lyrics. Over time, 'Icehouse' has grown to become a significant album in the annals of Australian rock history.
As of 2002, the album was said to have sold over 300,000 copies in Australia alone. In 2011, it was listed at No. 64 in the book, '100 Best Australian Albums'.
