"Prism" is the fourth studio album by American singer Katy Perry, released on October 18, 2013, by Capitol Records. Initially intended to be a "darker" follow-up to her previous work, the album ultimately evolved into a dance-inspired record. Collaborating with past producers while introducing new voices, much of Prism focuses on themes of self-empowerment, living in the moment, and personal relationships. Critics generally praised its mature lyrics, though some noted it felt more formulaic compared to her earlier projects.
The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, selling 286,000 copies in its first week—Perry's best opening week to date. It also topped charts in several countries, including Australia, Canada, and the UK, and became her fastest-selling album, with over 4 million copies sold worldwide. The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) recognized it as the sixth best-selling album globally in 2013 and the best-selling album by a female artist that year. Perry earned a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Vocal Album at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards.
The lead single, "Roar," released on August 10, 2013, topped the Billboard Hot 100, while "Unconditionally" followed on October 16 as the second single. Promotional singles included "Dark Horse" and "Walking on Air," with "Dark Horse" later released as the third single in December 2013, also reaching number one. Additional singles "Birthday" and "This Is How We Do" were released subsequently, and the album was promoted through the Prismatic World Tour.
After her California Dreams Tour, Perry expressed a desire to explore new musical directions. Following her divorce from Russell Brand, she initially contemplated a darker sound. However, as she began working on the album, she shifted towards a more upbeat and celebratory tone.
Perry's recording process began during her tour, where she noted fragments of ideas. Official sessions started in November 2012 but resumed in March 2013 after a trip to Madagascar inspired her to focus on self-improvement. Reuniting with collaborators from Teenage Dream, she recorded in California and then traveled to Stockholm to work with Max Martin and others.
The album opens with "Roar," an empowering anthem blending pop and arena rock. "Legendary Lovers" incorporates bhangra elements, while "Birthday" has a disco vibe. "Walking on Air" draws inspiration from early '90s house music. "Unconditionally," a power ballad, is noted for its mature themes of unconditional love.
Other tracks include "Dark Horse," influenced by trap and hip-hop, and "This Is How We Do," characterized as a summer anthem. The ballads "Ghost" and "By the Grace of God" reflect darker emotional themes, with Perry stating the latter was the first song written for the album during her challenging phase.
Prism marked a significant point in Perry's career, showcasing her evolution as an artist while blending personal themes with dance-pop influences. The album's success solidified her status as a major figure in contemporary pop music.
