"Teenage Dream" is the third studio album by American singer Katy Perry, released on August 24, 2010, through Capitol Records. The album blends a variety of musical styles, including pop, disco, electronic, rock, funk, house, Hi-NRG, and hip hop. It explores themes of young love, partying, self-empowerment, and personal growth. Perry co-wrote the album and collaborated with notable producers such as Max Martin, Dr. Luke, Benny Blanco, Stargate, and Greg Wells.
Teenage Dream made history by becoming the second album ever to produce five number-one singles on the US Billboard Hot 100, following Michael Jackson's 1987 album Bad. These singles include "California Gurls," "Teenage Dream," "Firework," "E.T.," and "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)." The sixth single, "The One That Got Away," peaked at number three. The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, selling 192,000 copies in its first week, and was certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), signifying ten million album-sale units.
Globally, the album has sold 3.1 million copies in the US and 1.3 million copies in the UK, where it was certified six times platinum by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI). Teenage Dream also charted within the Top 40 of the Billboard 200 year-end chart for three consecutive years.
Initial reviews of the album were mixed, with praise for its production and Perry’s vocal performance, but criticism for its lack of focus and vulnerability. However, retrospective reviews have been more favorable, with Teenage Dream being described as "pop perfection" and one of the defining albums of the new golden age of mega-pop. The album and its singles earned Perry seven Grammy Award nominations, including Album of the Year and Record of the Year, and won International Album of the Year at the 2011 Juno Awards.
The album’s success extended to digital sales, with all six singles (including two from the 2012 reissue Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection) selling over two million digital downloads each in the US. This achievement set a record for the most multi-Platinum singles from a single album, surpassing Fergie's The Dutchess (2006). Perry also became the first artist to have four Diamond-certified singles from the same album, with "E.T.," "Teenage Dream," "Firework," and "California Gurls." To support the album, Perry embarked on the California Dreams Tour from 2011 to 2012.
