"Quark, Strangeness and Charm" is the seventh studio album by the English space rock group Hawkwind, released in 1977. The album marked a transition for the band, being their first without co-founding member Nik Turner and drummer Alan Powell. Adrian "Ade" Shaw from Magic Muscle joined during the recording, replacing Paul Rudolph.
Known for its more pop-oriented sound compared to their earlier works, "Quark, Strangeness and Charm" incorporates elements of science fiction and explores themes of space and technology, characteristic of Hawkwind's psychedelic rock style. The album's title references concepts from particle physics, reflecting the band's fascination with science fiction and cosmic themes.
The cover art, designed by Hipgnosis, features internal photographs of Battersea Power Station processed by Richard Manning, with graphics by Geoff Halpin, contributing to the album's futuristic aesthetic.
In 2023, a new remix and surround mix of "Quark, Strangeness and Charm" by Steven Wilson was released as part of the Days Of The Underground boxed set by Atomhenge records, offering a fresh perspective on the album's sonic landscape and reinforcing its place in Hawkwind's discography as a blend of space rock and pop sensibilities.
