Alice in Chains

"Facelift" is the debut studio album by the American rock band Alice in Chains, which was released in August 1990. The album uniquely marked the transition from glam metal to grunge, a subgenre that became extremely popular in the early 1990s. One of the stand-out metrics that show the success of "Facelift" is that it became the first album by a grunge band to be certified gold by the RIAA, marking more than half a million copies sold. The album's lead single, "Man in the Box," became a major hit for the band and played an important role in the band's early success and mainstream recognition. The varied layered compositions and harmonizing vocals from members Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell set the tone for the band's distinctive sound. "Facelift" was produced by Dave Jerden. It features several of Alice in Chains’s best-known tracks including “Man in the Box,” “Bleed the Freak,” “Sea of Sorrow” and “We Die Young”, the last of which was the album's first single. The band, comprised of Layne Staley, Jerry Cantrell, Sean Kinney and Mike Starr, was formed in Seattle, Washington in 1987. Initially, Alice In Chains found themselves associated with the '80s hard rock bands, but their sound, with its striking harmonies and raw lyrics, also had plenty to do with the nascent grunge movement. This tension between eras and genres lent a distinctive sound to their debut, setting the groundwork for the following albums. In terms of commercial success, “Facelift” peaked at No. 42 on the Billboard 200 chart, while “Man in the Box” peaked at No. 18 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. Its success established Alice in Chains as a viable force in music and helped usher in a new wave of music that redefined rock in the early '90s. Overall, the album "Facelift" is admired for its evocative lyrics, which deal candidly with personal topics such as drug addiction and depression, and its aggressive yet melodic music crafted by Alice In Chains. Critically, it was embraced warmly by the fans and critics alike and had a significant influence on the rock music scene.
