dEUS

"In a Bar, Under the Sea" is the second studio album by dEUS, a rock band from Belgium. This album was released in September 1996 by Island Records. The album is characterized by an extremely varied style and broad range of influences, featuring elements of both pop and experimental rock. Some tracks would even be described as eclectic. "In a Bar, Under the Sea" spawned four singles, namely "Little Arithmetic", "Fell Off the Floor, Man", "Theme from Turnpike", and "Roses". The album was critically well received, and is often considered a cornerstone of 1990s alternative rock. It affirmed dEUS's status as one of the leading alternative rock bands of the time, featuring thoughtful lyrics and a distinctive, often unpredictable musical style. The album was produced by Eric Drew Feldman, an American musician and producer known for his work with other alternative acts and his previous involvement with Captain Beefheart's Magic Band. The distinctive cover art, depicting a scuba diver and various aquatic scenes, was designed by guitarist Rudy Trouvé. Despite the band's success, the album would be dEUS's last with the original lineup. Bassist Stef Kamil Carlens departed the group the following year, which led to significant changes for the band's subsequent releases. This album is noteworthy for its critical appreciation and as an essential release in the catalog of one of Belgium's most respected rock bands.
