UB40

"Guns in the Ghetto" is a studio album released by British reggae band UB40. Released on 27th January 1997, it's their 17th album in their expansive career. Putting together twelve tracks, the album highlights the band's top-notch abilities in composing reggae, pop, and even some elements of dancehall music. Like their previous creations, "Guns in the Ghetto" carries UB40's signature combination of smooth vocals, catchy rhythms, and lyrics that often address socio-political themes. The album's title track speaks to the experiences and treatment of marginalized groups in society, an ongoing theme in UB40's music. With this album, there was a departure from the norm as it was recorded at the Dep International Studio in Digbeth, Birmingham and co-produced by the American songwriter and producer Danny Schogger who is renowned for his work with artists such as Roger Daltrey and S Club 7. Despite mixed reviews from the critics, the album was well received by fans, further cementing UB40's stature as one of the world's best-loved reggae/pop bands. It reached number 31 on the UK Album Charts and went Gold with over 100,000 sales. Standout tracks include the emotionally charged "Tell Me Is It True," "I Love It When You Smile," and the haunting title track, "Guns in the Ghetto." The album shows the band at their creative peak, melding the pop and reggae influences that have defined their sound with a political conscience that's as relevant today as it was back in 1997.
