No Doubt

"Return of Saturn" is the fourth studio album by American rock band No Doubt. Released in April 2000, this album marked a transition for the band, straying from the ska punk sound that made them famous, the album explores more mature themes and exhibits experimental sounds. It was produced mostly by Glen Ballard, known for producing Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill. The album's title refers to the astrological event "Saturn Return," which signifies a time of self-evaluation and reflection upon one's life. The "Saturn Return" happens every 29.5 years, thus eventually marking the official entrance into adulthood and maturity. Band member Gwen Stefani was facing her own Saturn Return during the making of this album, and this deeply influenced the album's writing, resulting in numerous introspective and melancholic lyrics. "Return of Saturn" spawned some of No Doubt's most iconic hits, including "Ex-Girlfriend" and "Simple Kind of Life". Extraordinary and Bathwater were also released as singles. Despite its initial slow commercial success, it received positive reviews from critics. Many praised Gwen Stefani's songwriting and the album's exploration of new wave and new romantic music. It earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Album in 2001 and has since been certified platinum.
