The Black Angels

"Phosphene Dream" is the third studio album by the American rock band The Black Angels. Released on September 13, 2010, it marked a significant departure from the band's previous neo-psychedelic sound, leaning more towards a 1960s rock aesthetic. The Black Angels, based in Austin, Texas, is known for its intense, dark, psychedelic-influenced music. The group was formed in 2004 by Alex Maas, Stephanie Bailey, Christian Bland, and Nate Ryan. Prior to "Phosphene Dream," they released two full-length albums, but it was "Phosphene Dream" which propelled them into the mainstream. Produced through Blue Horizon, this album provided a cleaner and less distorted sound compared to their previous works. The Black Angels further developed their heavy blues-rock sound with this album, taking influence from classic acts like The Doors and The Velvet Underground with tracks like "Bad Vibrations" and "Yellow Elevator #2." The album received positive reviews from critics, praising its overall tonality and tighter song structures. It represented the band's desire to not remain stagnant in their musical evolution, thus, resulting in a fresh take on their older sound. It not only entrenched their position in the rock music scene but also broadened their appeal to a wider audience.
