Incubus

"Make Yourself" is the third studio album by American rock band Incubus, released on October 26, 1999, through Epic and Immortal Records. The album achieved double platinum status and produced three successful singles: "Pardon Me," "Stellar," and "Drive," with "Drive" reaching No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100. This album marked the first collaboration with turntablist Chris Kilmore, who replaced DJ Lyfe. Musically, it blends genres like alternative metal, alternative rock, nu metal, and funk rock, with critics noting Incubus's ability to blur the lines between metal and alternative rock. The writing process followed an intense tour for their previous album, S.C.I.E.N.C.E., during which the band had over 300 shows in 1998. Vocalist Brandon Boyd mentioned that the writing felt like a form of therapy, influenced by personal experiences, including heartbreak and loss. The album's themes reflect this emotional complexity, with Boyd exploring vulnerability and personal connection in the lyrics. Tensions among band members during the recording led them to briefly seek group therapy, illustrating the intense creative dynamics involved in making the album. Notably, the song "Drive" explores themes of fear and uncertainty, while "Stellar" was inspired by Boyd's new girlfriend. To promote Make Yourself, Incubus toured with bands like Primus and System of a Down, further establishing their presence in the rock scene. The album’s singles received significant airplay and were accompanied by music videos that helped boost their popularity. The success of Make Yourself significantly increased the band's audience, especially among female fans, and laid the groundwork for their future achievements in the music industry. A tour edition was later released, featuring acoustic versions of some tracks, highlighting the album's enduring impact.
